Three women met for the first time in a small church in Fort Langley BC. Nestled on the corner and near the park the church was the perfect setting for pre-school activities. Three young women, who encouraged their young ones to get involved, soon became involved as well. Heather was married for 15 years to a businessman. A kind, gentle soul she cared about people and making new friends. She was as loyal a friend as you could find. Karin was married for the first time but it was the second attempt for her husband. Vicky was married a few years to a sound mixer who had started sweeping floors in a small sound studio and later achieved success.

They sang along to words that encouraged participation and friendship. The more we get together, together, together. The more we get together the happier we'll be. Soon they began to get together moving from house to house as easily as they moved from subject to subject.  All three didn't have to work outside the home and were committed to their children. They would attend children’s concerts, sit through swimming lessons and get together for weekly Bunco games.  Any excuse to get together was fine with them. Days turned into weeks and then months as time flew by more quickly each day. Like most parents they were so focused on their kids they forgot that time was moving quickly for them as well.

Time moves quickly, but there are always days and special moments that are not easily forgotten. One day as the three women sat talking Vicky told Heather and Karin that she and her husband were breaking up. This wasn't a shocking revelation as both women had heard Vicky complain about her spouse.  According to Vicky he was inattentive and only focused on his work. Late nights at sound studios, working with musicians and surrounded by all kinds of distractions was not the best prescription for a happy marriage. When a woman says she was embarrassed that she married her husband it's never a good sign. Nevertheless Vicky's friends provided emotional support and her ex provided the financial support so she could stay at home. Soon everything was back to normal.

They continued to get together at every kind of function you could imagine. At times Heather's Alan and Karin's husband Brian would join in.  All three women had 3 children so they would move from house to house, share meals and take turns co-coordinating the kid's favourite activity, sleep overs. They made sure the boys were on the same baseball and soccer teams and would mind each other’s kids when needed.  The three women had different personalities. Heather was warm an outgoing. Karin was outgoing as well and focused on her deep religious beliefs. Vicky was the quieter of the three and more analytical in nature. Their differences kept it interesting and their children provided commonality. They thought of each other as best friends.  As many discovered thoughts and actions can be many different things when friendships are put to the test. The test was about to come.

Heather's husband Alan loved kids. He coached Karin and Vicky’s kids as well as his own in soccer and baseball. He knew that Vicky's kids had rarely seen their father and he made sure her two boys got the extra attention boys need when there is no father there. Her youngest boy, Dylan bonded with him over time to the point where he would call him Daddy.  They continued to bond to the point where one day at 4 years old he bumped into a chair at Heather's house and as he broke into tears he ran by Vicky's waiting arms and sought Alan’s for support.  A special bond developed between them.

It was a sunny day at the beach. Heather, Karin and Vicky basked in the sunshine as the kids played in the water. Heather's husband had joined them. They enjoyed all enjoyed snacks as much as they enjoyed hearing the kid’s laughter.  Life was good and so was the weather.  Alan was an exercise fanatic.  Although he was the oldest of the group he was full of energy.  Heather often described his high energy level as relentless. He could play with kids for hours on end.  He loved to exercise and had been going to the same gym, faithfully for years.

Vicky had 3 children and had lost the habit of exercise. She was a small woman, 110 pounds soaking wet. She knew she was out of shape and wanted to tone up.  She asked Alan if he'd be willing to go to the gym with her and help her get started.  He agreed to help and they would meet in the mornings on a regular basis.  He showed her how to get into an exercise routine and soon she felt the benefits of the increased energy, and the tighter body exercise brings. They would go for coffee or often share coffee at Vicky's house. Their talks would stretch into hours of seemingly endless conversations.

One day over coffee Vicky brought up the subject of her ex-husband Mike.  Although Alan had never met him based on Vicky's description, he didn't like him. She spoke of how he was never home and never there for the kids. She spoke of how he'd come home late at night demanding sex and how he'd make her skin crawl. It would have been OK if it were someone else she’d say. In other words she liked sex, but not with him.  According to her he was a jerk, an idiot and that she was embarrassed to have married him.  Alan’s dislike for him grew when one evening he watched her oldest boy cry because his Dad didn't even phone him on his birthday. Given a chance he would have punched his lights out.

One day as Vicky was voicing her displeasure with her ex-husband Alan reassured her.  He told her she was a good person and a good mother. He wanted to make sure her self-esteem had not been eroded by a man Vicky described in such a negative manner. The regular exercise meetings went on for months. One evening after a workout Allan invited Vicky over to his house to enjoy a hot tub with Heather. Vicky wasn't interested. Next he suggested they all meet for a drink. Vicky was not interested but she was keen on going for drinks with him alone.

So they did and as usual the conversation flowed as the hours flew by. They went back to Vicky's house and she invited him in for a drink. They talked and laughed until the early hours.  He saw how she stared too long and hung on every word he said. He noticed how she found an excuse to bend over in front of him and show her butt. She was giving him signs and he knew it. Worst still, he knew he liked it.

Meanwhile things weren't going well for Heather and Alan.  He spoke to her many times about the issues between them but it fell on deaf ears.  He even told her despite being faithful for 15 years that he was having difficulty. His words fell on deaf ears as well. The one day weeks later it happened. After another morning of exercise they went back to Vicky's house. The attraction between them was obvious and soon they fell into each other’s arms. Vicky said she had dreamed of making love to Alan and he said the same.  They couldn’t keep their hands off each other. In the midst of children any opportunity to touch in private was taken. In private their love making would last for hours in every position or place.

For weeks that turned into months they met more frequently.  When the kids would leave the room they would hug and kiss as if it were their last one.  Alan kept asking Vicky if she was serious.  Vicky told him she loved him more than any other man and spoke of how he was 10 times the man her ex-husband was. He too had fallen for Vicky and the feelings grew stronger and stronger each day.

In any relationship regardless of its nature there is a defining moment.  As the intensity of the affair increased so did Alan's feelings of doubt and insecurity.  Did she really mean the things she said?   He had to consider another reality for when he left Heather he would leave his kids as well. It's a subject rarely discussed.  When a man has a problem with his wife and leaves he knows that he won't see his kids at breakfast and in time another man will be there with his kids.  Many people, women in particular say end one relationship before another starts. This is much easier for a woman to say because almost always they keep the house and the kids. You have to wonder if the situation was reversed how their opinion would differ. These thoughts raced through his mind so he called Vicky and told her he wasn't sure it would work. Without hesitation she invited him over. When they talked he first asked her if she was serious and if not now was the time to say so. She pushed him back on the couch opened his pants and within moments she had him in her mouth.  At one point she stopped grabbed her jaw and joked that she was out of practice. Soon she continued and in between the moans and the groans he finally exploded in her mouth.

She looked him in the eyes and with the most sincere look imaginable said don't give up on us you've got to believe in us. Later she walked him to the door hugs and kisses she'd bend her knees so their legs would touch. In the wee hours of the morning he drove home. That night after their talk he was confident she was sincere and he knew he couldn't live without her.  Many more passionate nights took place.  At her house she would use a knife to wedge the door shut and they'd make love for hours.  One night after three hours of wild sex she glanced at the clock and was amazed how three hours had flown by.  I've never made love for this long she said.  She was always amazed with Allan's staying power. So long and so many times she’d say claiming it wasn't normal, but never complaining about it. They'd make love in every room. They'd reassure each other and she'd tell him when you leave Heather we'll make love every day.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, In the midst of all this everything else was as normal. The three women Heather, Karin and Vicky would attend sports events and later all of them, including Karin's husband Brian would go for breakfast, camp together and have barbeques. The secret affair between Alan and Vicky was kept a secret.  In the middle of all this was Karin.  She was a heavy girl some would say obese with a strong will and even stronger opinions.  Fort Langley is in the middle of the Bible belt and she was at home. Her faith she claimed was a big part of her life and she attended church on a regular, consistent basis. Her husband Brian was clearly the subordinate in the relationship. It was painfully obvious to everyone who was in charge. In short when she said jump he'd say how high.

He did have the odd moment of courage around Karin but that was usually fuelled by beer. One week Allan and Heather joined Karin and Brian at a campground they had visited for years. Karin didn't want Brian to drink so he did the oldest trick known of.  He pretended to drink nonalcoholic beer and poured the real stuff into a mug. When Karin left on an errand his beer consumption increased as did his courage.  Soon he was telling all who'd listen that he was in charge and statements of bravado flowed as easily as the beer. Later when Karin returned his demeanor changed to the puppet everyone had come to know. They seemed bored with each other and truthfully he was boring.  Vicky used to always comment that they seemed to have no passion, never touched and acted like two cold fish.  Karin was unaware of what was happening with Vicky and Allan. Heather believed Karin was a good person and a sincere friend.  She thought very highly of her.

Meanwhile Vicky and Allan continued to grow stronger.  Any excuse to meet was taken and they spoke on the phone or in person every day.  One day after Christmas when Allan went to Vicky's house she expressed the fear that he would change his mind about their relationship after spending time at home over the holidays.  He looked her in the eye and promised, no matter what he'd stand up for her as she had said to him. They even talked of their future together.  One day Vicky and Allan met with Vicky's ex mother in law, a great lady that knew of their relationship.  Allan assured her that no matter what he stand up for Vicky, a woman she loved like a daughter. She believed him and knew how much he loved her.  She cautioned them both that the truth would find a way out and Allan encouraged Vicky that it was past the time to tell the truth.

Then one night as always happens the truth came out.  A call from a friend of a friend was all it took to confirm what Heather had suspected for a long time.  Her husband who was unhappy with her was sleeping with one of her best friends.  The woman she went shopping with was having sex with her husband. The woman she went to Disneyland with was making out in the hot tub with her husband while she slept.  Enraged she drove to Vicky’s house and when she arrive Karin was there helping Vicky paint a room. Heather started to hit Vick and Karin intervened shocked and in disbelief of the accusation. Vicky simply cried out it’s over, it’s over something she hadn’t shared with Allan.

Heather then drove home and confronted Allan.  He didn’t dodge the question and reminded her that on 25 occasions he sat down, expressed his concerns and she had done nothing to heed his warnings. He hadn’t planned on it being her friend in fact he tried to avoid it but feelings took over. He also told her that he’d stand up for Vicky no matter what.  Heather countered that Vicky had acted like he didn’t exist.

When it hit the fan Heather and Alan were devastated.  So too were Karin and Brian caught in the crossfire. Vicky’s reaction was to go to a Bunco game the next day as if nothing happened. Heather took comfort when Karin said, that it would never be the same with her friendship with Vicky and she’d be there for Heather.  At least she thought her friend Karin the self-described Christian would be there for her.  Most of us discover there are two kinds of religious people those who really are religious and those who simply pretend to be.  The pretenders are often referred to as fair weather or convenient Christians. Heather soon discovered what a pretender her so called friend Karin really was.  After the event she was with Vicky every day leaving Heather alone.  As unbelievable as it sounds she ignored her friend to spend time with the friend who was having sex with her friend’s husband.  Vicky’s ex mother in law was not impressed with Vicky or Karin. She even called Vicky insincere and was disgusted how she acted like Allan never existed.  She scoffed at Karin for ignoring Heather and told Allan Vicky would stick to Karen like glue.

So here is Heather in a marriage in turmoil with an unhappy husband. She discovers her husband is having sex with one of her best friends Vicky. Then to add salt to her wounds her other so called friend ignores her to spend time with the woman who slept with her husband.  The weeks that followed were sad and lonely. Trying to pick up the pieces and dealing with the hurt.  Heather emotionally crippled by the thought of her two friends not really being friends and her husband being disloyal. Allan’s pain was just as strong, the realization of a broken marriage coupled with the thought of losing the children was devastating.  Equally devastating was the thought that although he stood up for Vicky when the truth came out she folded like a tent and pretended he didn’t exist.  He moved out of the house and the pain was too much to bear and soon alcohol became a constant crutch. Many sad and lonely nights ensued and weeks turned into months.  Allan kept in close contact with his kids and made sure Heather had the money she needed to stay home.  He went to the house and did the chores before returning to his apartment.  He didn’t know that another defining moment was around the corner.

It was a sunny day at the ballpark. Heather and Alan were there to watch their boy play ball and Vicky was there to watch her boy play as well.  Alan like Heather was hurting big time and for different reasons. Heather couldn’t believe someone she thought was her best friend could sleep with her husband and Allan couldn’t believe that although he stood up for Vicky when push came to shove she acted as if his feelings meant nothing.  Moments later Vicky’s ex made a rare appearance.  She saw her ex gave him a warm and flirtatious smile. Suddenly it hit Alan like a brick. This was the man she said she was embarrassed to marry, a jerk and an idiot that according to her made her skin crawl.

He thought of all the times she spoke negatively about him. He remembered that night and the look on her face when she said don’t give up on us you have to believe in us. He thought of all the times he’d asked her if she was sure and how she responded.  He recalled how her ex mother in law who loved her as much as anyone said she was insincere.  He saw how she turned as cold as ice in an instant and left him alone to take the heat. Heather’s words he had heard a thousand times echoed in his head.  She acts like you don’t exist. She played you like a fool.  She used you like she used me.  Now he knew that her words meant nothing and after standing up for her when things got tough it hurt even more.  Now he realized that all she really cared about was covering her butt and how he felt meant nothing. He remembered that while he and Heather were in pain she went and played cards.  He realized she could turn on and off the feelings like a convenient tap.  He remembered her mother in law after seeing Vicky turn into a cold fish at the pool and her words rang clear. I used to put Vicky on a pedestal she said but now she’s down a few pegs. How could she act like that, it’s not fair she said. He thought why did she put me through all of this and how he never would have had sex with her if he knew her words meant nothing. He felt dirty. In short he lost it when he realized he had been used just like Heather.

For both Heather and Alan the realization that Vicky was an insincere user was one thing but as bad as it was things got worse.  Through all of this Alan was trying hard to keep his family in the lifestyle they were accustomed to. He took a position as an Executive VP of a Real Estate organization. He wanted to be close to home so he could visit his kids, mow the lawn and pay the extra cost of his apartment. He signed a separation agreement and although his lawyer advised differently he paid Heather $5,000.00 a month.  He didn’t want his family to hurt more than they already had.

To add to Heather’s hurt the other woman she thought was her friend proved to be a pretender as well. She was with Vicky constantly while she ignored Heather. Apparently the Christian expression of do unto others only mattered when it was convenient.  Heather was hurt beyond belief and Alan frequently saw her tears.  It hurt him as well. Even their children had an opinion. Heather’s daughter refers to insincere women as ‘Karin’s’ and uses the phrase ‘she pulled a Karin’ to refer to insincere people There was more to come however and Brian, Karin’s husband was the next contributor.  He told a relative who was an employee in Alan’s company of drinking problem as well as his affair with Vicky. Word spread throughout the company and weeks later he was terminated from his position.  Cash flow soon dried up and Heather and Alan lost their house.  When Alan would drive his little boy to school he had to change routes as his boy would cry when they drove by their old house. Next he lost his business.  These were people Alan and Heather thought were friends.

This is a story about deception and false friendships. This is a story about the aftermath. You throw a single rock into a pond and you have many ripples. There were many ripples to come.  Heather moved away and didn’t bother telling Vicky or Karin that she was moving.  Karin telephoned before the move but Heather refused to return her calls.  A few years later Karin called Heather to invite her to attend a weekend retreat with many of their once mutual friends. Heather after hearing her message called another woman back to get the details.  After the retreat Karin made another feeble attempt and wrote a letter pretending to be her young boy and saying they wanted to visit.  Heather read the letter threw it in the garbage and never responded.

She refers to Karin as the pretender and avoids Christians afraid it might be another Karin.  Heather wonders how a so called Christian can spout words like do unto others and then desert her in her time of need.  Friends would ask her how Karin would have liked her doing the same if the situation was reversed. Heather knew she would have never done the same to Karin. When Heather was asked by a friend if Karin was a pretender as a friend or a pretender as a Christian her one word answer of’ both’ said it all.  She has not spoken to Vicky or Karin for over 15 years and chances are she never will.  A chance meeting in a small church in Fort Langley is where it all began and the pain of lies, deception and false friendships cuts like a knife. Make sure your friends are real ones for as Heather discovered friends who use you cut you deeper than the sharpest knife ever could.
